Ikea Project #3 - Quote or Photo Stand

My #3 Project was a .99 cents stand that is good for quotes or photos. It has 4 pieces, the frame, the base and 2 plastic plates (which are covered with a thin plastic cover that once you are using it you peel off the plates.  I chose to get this in white so that I could personalize it. 

Supplies:

• Ikea Stand set 
• Washi tape (color and pattern of your choice)
• exacto knife
• modge podge (I used the glitter type)
• quote printed onto colored paper

To decorate wrap the washi tape around the sides from the inner slot to all the way around to the other side of the slot. Because you need to leave that slot open for the plates and quote to slide in. Use an exacto knife and cut off washi tape using the slot for a guide. Keep doing this step until you get the frame looking like you want it too. Once you have decided you are done. Seal the washi tape onto the frame with modge podge. Let dry.

I chose to go with a princess bride quote. Who doesn't like that movie. there are so many good quotes in that movie. In inkscape I created my quote template. You can do this in word also. I have a printable template below if you like this quote. Print the quote onto colored paper (your choice). Then cut out to match the size of the plastic plates. 

Sandwich the printed quote in between the 2 plastic plates and slide into the frame from the top and you are finished. Now sit back and enjoy glancing at this terrific quote.

Plastic Bag Organizer - IKEA Project #2

IKEA find #2 - Plastic Bag Organizer

I came across this little beauty for either $2.99 or $3.99 (can't remember). It is made of white plastic and you can either mount it to the wall with the sticky strips (attached) or use nails/screws and hang it with the holes in the back. how many times do you have an abundance of plastic bags from grocery shopping and they just get tossed to the side or end up all over the place. I have had that problem, but no longer. Not now that I have this baby. 

Now that we have address it's function.

Let's move onto making it pretty.

I have been using my washi tape on everything lately. So why should this be any different. I found 3 washi tapes that I liked the colors, patterns and they worked together. Taping horizontally up the container I created lines that not only looked great but we're super simple to apply. After finishing the tape design, I sealed it with glitter modge podge. This way it was more durable and would last so much longer. After the modge podge dries it is ready to attach to the wall and start filling.

Bathroom Wall Art - Epic WIN

I am doing the happy dance.

After my epic fail a couple days ago, I was determined to make this work.

So I figured while I was redoing it, I might as well make a few adjustments that will help this artwork last longer. My first attempt I used Card Stock, this time I grabbed 2 slats from a venetian blind and cut them up. Because after I put up the first set I thought to myself " hmmm card stock and moisture, not sure if that's a good idea". So after thinking about it for a while I thought of these slats that i had. and thought "hmm there plastic, plastic & moisture, purrrrfect".

The only reason I have these extra slats is because they broke off the blind and they were replaced by new ones. 

supplies I used for this project:

• 2 off white venetian blind slat's
• scissors
• hot glue gun & glue
• washi tape
• chipboard or recycled cereal boxes
• 3 different colored scrapbook paper 12x12
• glitter modge podge
• tacks

Disney Countdown Frame

We are Disney fans and love going to Disney (either park, we have been to both). We celebrate our wedding anniversary each year with a disney vacation. We are celebrating our 5th year and decided to splurge for a disney resort hotel this time. We have always stayed at good neighbor hotels or hotels farther out. I have seen many creative ways to keep track of the days left tip we pack up the good ole' car and head out on the highway. I wanted to do a framed countdown that I can set on my desk and look and dream about everyday. 

I am also on a washi crusade. everything I look at lately I ask myself "should I washi that, or not"? This was a perfect project to washi like crazy. I had the perfect washi tape for it. "Alice in wonderland" washi and a nice white and turquoise stripe wash. 

Supplies I used:

• 8 x10 frame (you can get 2 of these frames for $8.99 at costco)
• Alice in Wonderland Washi Tape
• Turquoise and White striped Washi Tape
• Exacto Knife
• Scissors
• Glittery chipboard letters
• mounting tape
• Scrapbook Tape
• 2 sheets of pink card stock
• 1 sheet of white card stock
• 2 Turquoise Brads
• Hole Punch

First I removed the mat from inside the frame. Then taking my Turquoise washi tape, I applied a strip over the burgandy inside stripe on the mat. Using an exacto knife I was able to trim down the excess tape and to also cut the corners (see photo above)

Next I grabbed the alice in wonderland washi tape (this tape was wider) I layed a strip down the left side then the right side. Now lay down 2 more strips one on the top and then on the bottom (these 2 strips will overlap the 2 side ones). In the photo above the left photo shows how the tape is hanging off the sides because it is too wide. take scissors or your exacto knife and trim excess.

Left Photo: show how I took the turquoise washi tape again and layed layers onto the front of the frame. similar to the way I applied it to the mat. then I added 2 strips to each corner .

Middle Photo: I put the mat back into the frame and this is what it looks like.

Right Photo: I added pink glittery chipboard letters. spelling out: Disney Countdown, mounting them on with 1/16 inch mounting tape. 

Cut a white piece of card stock the side of the mat. this one was 6"x8"

Photo 1: taking the 6x8 I laid the mat on top of it and traced the open rectangle onto the paper.  Then 

because my number pages are 2"x2 1/2" each I traced 2 boxes inside the 1st.

Photo 2: taking Turquoise washi tape I applied it the areas that would still be scene after mounting and adding the number pages. (it is ok if you overlap the lines, they will not be scene.

Photo 3 & 4: tape 2 (2"x2 1/2") boxes into the 2 spaces allotted for them.

Photo 5: Tape mat board onto bottom sheet you just finished making.

The last thing you need to do is to attach the number cards. punch a hole in the top of each card (you are going to need a card for each number). Take a brad and poke it through the holes and into the back sheet. and now you are finished.

Twilight Chess Pieces - Great for throwing a Twilight Party

This is my first ever craft project that I used wash tape on. I have been dying to make these and so I set some time aside yesterday and tackled this project. These are the perfect table or food area display for a twilight party. If you are a twilight fan you know that chess pieces, apples, ribbons and striped tulips are the go to designs for twilight anything. Namely because these are the items pictured on the front of the 4 book series. Also the color theme usually is black, red and white. 

Supplies needed for this project:

• wood chess pieces (I purchased mine from oh my crafts)
• washi tape
• paint
• paint brush
• masking tape
• exacto knife or scissors (much easier with exacto knife)

I started off by painted the edges black. (see pictures below)

Because I was sloppy I also got black on the front and back of the piece and ended up having to also paint the front and back black. If you are careful during this step you can eliminate the masking tape all together.

This photo shows you why I had to use masking tape. Because the block is black the wash tape isn't as clear and crisp like it should be. the below photo shows how the top part of the piece does not have masking tape underneath and the bottom part does.

With this particular chevron washi tape there are 2 different looks you can get from this just by the way you place the next piece. the top part shows what it would look like if you continued the chevron pattern all the way up. the bottom shows how by moving the design over a little you will end up with a row of diamonds in between the chevron rows. I choose the diamond look.

     

This next photo shows the steps I took to cover the front and back of the pieces . 

Step 1: (Top Right) Cover entire piece with rows of masking tape.

Step 2: (Left) Apply rows of washi tape making sure you match up the dots, stripes, etc. 

Step 3: (Bottom Right) using your exacto knife, hold the overlapping tape with your left hand                     and slowly a sharp blade and a up and down motion, cut around the edges of the piece.

When I applied the striped washi tape. I decided to do it from top to bottom instead of side to side.

I started applying the tape to the middle first and the moved outward. When laying down the stripes I overlapped the last red stripe onto the first red stripe of the previous row.

These turned out so good, you can always add ribbon around the middle, darken the edges,  or even bling it up more.
